25 October 2020 / Introducing:
Felt art toys by Josh Felton
I was born in Wigan and moved to Manchester to study Design and Art Direction at Metropolitan University. I’ve lived here ever since, first in the Northern Quarter and now Ancoats.
I’ve been making felt toys probably since college. My first one was a tiny Yeti that I made whilst sat at my mum and dad’s dining room table. Its been a very on / off journey but I keep coming back to them. Making them is very therapeutic and for some reason making creepy, weird, little creatures that are a bit gross, really makes me chuckle!
I take inspiration from loads of sources - street art, 80’s and 90’s toys, folklore and the concept art for video games mainly. I normally move from an idea to a loose sketch with a load of scribbled ‘features’ for the toy and then start creating very quickly. I use the production process to refine my work as I go. This means I usually have a lot of odd looking ‘prototype’ versions of critters knocking about the flat!
For some reason making creepy, weird, little creatures that are a bit gross, really makes me chuckle!
I love creating these guys for my own amusement so for anyone to think they’re worth buying is amazing. I’d love to get to the stage where there were enough ‘fans’ of my work that I could develop a subscription service for my toys, sending out a new idea that I’ve developed to a load of crazy people every month.
At the moment whilst balancing a ‘proper’ job with all the craziness going on, I offer commissions based on either the work I’ve already produced or weird ideas people come to me with rather than ‘mass producing’ creatures. I think its the best way for people to get a quality piece of work and it sparks off some really fun projects.
Josh’s zombie felt toys are now available to buy exclusively from the Ancoats stories store. Find them here.
